albert bierstadt

hey dorks, it’s art history time. if you’re not familiar with the classic frontier paintings by albert bierstadt – you will be now. you owe it to yourself to stare at these bad boys. that light! that detail! oh wow, i could just imagine a million reproductions hanging in thrift stores & seventies living rooms the world over and not getting a second glance (shame).

Albert Bierstadt (18301902) was a German-American painter best known for his large landscapes of the American West. In obtaining the subject matter for these works, Bierstadt joined several journeys of the Westward Expansion. Though not the first artist to record these sites, Bierstadt was the foremost painter of these scenes for the remainder of the 19th century.

his work was criticized by contemporaries for being too large, with excessive light (actually known as “luminism”), dramatic colours & an exagerrated shift from foreground to background.

my doctor had an entire wall in her consulting room wallpapered with a picture of the yosemite valley, i found it strangely calming.

you can call me al

this gives me such goosebumps, it’s ridiculous! also makes me want to jump up & dance like a crazy. the concert was  in 1987  & held in harare – you can buy the dvd at amazon (or take2 for the locals). the graceland clip is equally rad.

boogie woogie board

my mom snapped these in the late afternoon at kogel bay – bear in mind that they were taken from the coastal road above the beach – if you have ever been to kogel bay you’ll know how far away that is. love this sequence & the sunset light on the water.

parisienne

http://i37.tinypic.com/2coj71v.jpg

parisienne is a the latest perfume by YSL, and they have enlisted some well known stylish people (joanna goddard amongst them) to blog for them:

YSL is sending five renowned bloggers on a journey around the country to discover and reveal their very own PARISIENNE experiences in New York City, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. YSL has chosen an ensemble of women with passions for beauty, art, design, music, fashion and food to create a travel diary of their trip. Stay tuned here to read articles, see photos and follow the women on their journey.

i like the concept because there’s isn’t heavy product placement in the stories (which would have ultimately made the bloggers look like sell-outs and the ‘experience’ a bit fake).

(ps: one of my favourite perfumes that i use often is YSL elle – so if parisienne is even vaguely similar, it’s probably amazing.  i am very partial to darker/rich scents like viktor & rolf’s flowerbomb, kate moss’ fragrance etc)

smith’s rosebud salve

http://i33.tinypic.com/2nurmm1.jpg

have you tried smith’s rosebud salve? i got a tin for my birthday – it smells like roses and flying dreams and puppies and baby powder, not to mention how radical it makes your lips feel

it was formulated in 1892 and contains a secret blend of essential oils & cottonseed oil in a special petrolatum base. an all purpose skin preparation that’s good for relieving chapped lips & skin, diaper rash, blemishes, detergent burns, rough cuticles & softening rough hands.

you can pick it up for R99 at any Melissa’s (it’s really worth it as it lasts forever, i haven’t even made a dent in mine – cute tin is a bonus.) definitely beats 8 hour cream by a mile. get some! and if you’re a dude: get some for your girlfriend, she’ll love you (more).
