priorities

jakob alt – 1836

spending time in a studio, whether it’s in front of an easel by the window or just at a desk, is probably my favourite pastime. unfortunately i don’t make that a priority any more – somewhere between work, eating, sleeping, friends & family, i lose my spare hours mostly to procrastination and the internet. how can i not, considering the never ending supply of awesome it presents me with? that’s no excuse though (and believe me, i’ve tried to make excuses). less internet, less computers... these are things i need to work on.

i know that it’s ironic considering i’m saying this on my blog – but maybe an affirmation is needed here.

replace facebook, youtube & yelp with art, design & fashion blogs (by david fullerton)

if you feel similarly, or perhaps there’s another aspect of your life you have been neglecting or just want to work on, you should check out mnmlist, a project about minimalism by the guy who brought us zen habits (a great website about simplifying your life and focusing on what’s important). leo doesn’t update mnmlist too often, but that’s kind of the point. one of my favourite posts is about making small changes, and i like his article about taking a digital vacation.

hup holland, i’m never ghana give you up

football fever is still going – it’s the netherlands vs brazil in just 15 minutes time, and ghana vs urugay tonight. as you may have guessed i’m rooting for holland (my extended family are kaaskoppe hehe) and ghana (viva afrika). i’m also supporting germany because of even more familial connections; they’ll be playing argentina in cape town on saturday, what a game that’s going to be! i would be a bit disappointed if it ended up being just south american teams in the world cup… but i’m still going to enjoy this tournament to the very end no matter what the outcome.

nemres vintage

dear vintage satchel, it was love at first sight for you and me. unfortunately someone else bought you before i could, and now i’m left searching etsy for satchels just as nice… but nothing compares to you.

perhaps nemres will find another beautiful leather bag that will ease my broken heart. at least all their nice clothes are making me feel better.

thief & bandit

i’ve become a one-item-of-jewellery-at-a-time kind of gal, so i absolutely love the handmade pieces from thief & bandit because they are simultaneously striking & beautifully simple. their t-shirts are great, too.

ceramic house

the design of this attic to maximise space & provide for various living areas on different levels is pretty darn cool.

instead of taking the existing rooms as a starting point, the architect placed a large three-dimensional object in the space, creating a play of heights and a second level. the mezzanine-like structure not only provides a separate sleeping area and extra storage, but also screens off a kitchen area and bathroom.

kapama karula

don’t ask me why but i have been looking at a ton of safari lodges lately (no i’m not planning a trip, if only) and amongst all the usual colonial african, hunting lodge, dark leather couches, elephant heads on the walls and springbok hides on the floor kind of places i discovered kapama karula. aaaah, a serene non-kitsch sanctuary in the middle of the african bush. sign me up, please. pass me a gin while i look at some lions and enjoy the vervet monkeys… that would be great.
