betty skelton is a retired land speed record car driver and acrobatic airplane pilot who set 17 aviation and automobile records and helped create opportunities for women in aviation, auto racing, astronautics and advertising. she started reading books on aviation when she was 8 years old and became a qualified pilot at the age of 16. these photos were taken in 1948 when she was 22.
