oh, perfect swedish homes (tra la la)

have a sneaking suspicion that the apartments for sale at alvhem are cleverly furnished, styled and photographed by mega smart swedish real estate agents – duping us all into believing that we are inferior beings with inferior apartments.

i’d like to imagine that these are real homes, though. and then i ask myself… but why would you sell?

(they even have prop cats)

thoughts on furniture

i don’t own much in the ways of furniture. besides bedroom basics and one (mega) couch, the rest of our apartment is filled with my flatmates’ stuff (gratefully so, thanks for being grown ups guys.) so i tend to daydream about fantasy furniture to fill my fantasy home with some day. daydreaming = internetting. obviously.

i could see this as a casual kitchen / work / study table

i had a drawing table once, but it wasn’t nearly as cool as this one.

what does one do with stools, anyway? i’d probably use these as end tables.

these chairs are beautiful. what else is there to say.

could be don draper’s desk… should be my desk.

this rocking chair looks like retro patio furniture, but more fun.

and i like the way these chairs are arranged (plus the chairs themselves, naturally)

jen + cuan: things i like right now

things i like right now – special edition! jen is another twitter friend who has teamed up with her working partner / pal cuan to bring us a double (rainbow) list. in her own words,

cuan and i have been working together as a creative team for 6 years. we’ve worked at ogilvy cape town for 4 years now. we pretty much do most things together, despite having very different ‘taste / style / opinions / likes / dislikes’.

i like everything on this list, especially vonnegut, mussels & national pride … as well as mr. murray – who i have never met, but i’m sure we’d get along fine.

things i like right now by jen + cuan

  1. Espadrilles: Pretty much a classic, chic summertime essential. Carvela at Spitz has a great range.
  2. Zombies – They’re so much cooler than vampires.
  3. Dry Rosé: Started drinking dry rose´ on a trip to France earlier this year. It’s pretty much the perfect summer afternoon drink.
  4. Jonathan Safran Foer – Wrote ‘Everything is Illuminated,’ which became a movie starring Elijah Wood from the Shire. More recently wrote ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.’ Just as good.
  5. Mussels: And they’re on the SASSI green list. Try Dunes in Hout bay (021 790 1876) for the best fresh mussels this side of the mountain. Strandloper (0832277195) makes a giant cauldron of fresh mussels as part of their amazing buffet, totally worth the drive.
  6. Kurt Vonnegut Jnr – My favourite. Wrote ‘Breakfast of Champions,’ ‘Slaughterhouse 5,’ ‘Cat’s Cradle’ etc. If you like Sci-fi, even a little, you must read.
  7. The Wild Beasts – band from Northern England. Lead singer sounds like a lovechild between David Bowie and Freddie Mercury. Bowie and Mercury probably did have sex, so it’s not too far fetched.
  8. Puffins: They are the new bunnies. Fact.
  9. National Pride – It’s a bit July 2010, but I still think it’s awesome. South Africans are finally starting to say, “I love my country” and mean it.
  10. Mr Murray: My boyfriend and I recently welcomed Mr Murray into our home. He is a wire-haired-naughty-fox terrier. Murray Christmas everyone!

annette: things i like right now

i know annette better as aydekay, possibly the funniest gal on twitter. she makes me laugh all the time (no pressure, annette.) she has a tumblr too. AND she made the collage below herself (why didn’t i think of hearts?)

things i like right now by annette

  1. Gold Watches. I’ve been in the market for a watch for quite some time, and at the moment I’m leaning towards something like this, as soon as I can find one that is.
  2. 70 Juta. Dubbed “Jo’burg’s hip new cultural precinct”. Whatever that means.
  3. Jewellery by Eric Loubser. I Love Eric’s unusual pieces, so far Father xxxmas has said no, but maybe if I’m really good this year.
  4. Hyperboleandahalf. Too funny!
  5. Arrested Development. Only really got into this recently, two thumbs way up.
  6. Animals. I probably spend most of my time on the information superhighway looking at animal pictures. I can’t help it, look at that face!
  7. Lace-up boots. These are from Ann Demeulemeester.
  8. Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus. A slow, ponderous roadtrip documentary about the (deep) South, a ‘portrait of rural America as beautiful as it is bizarre’ with great, great music that’s really stuck.
  9. Jhb Skyline from Love Jozi. Super handy for hanging stuff (from Love Jozi).
  10. Richard Avedon. According to his The New York Times obituary, “his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America’s image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century.” I also think they’re nice.
  11. The Decemberists – The King is Dead. The band’s sixth album, “The King is Dead,” is only due Jan. 18, but you can stream it here in the meantime.
  12. Jack Passion. I really, really like red hair, and I really like beards, and Mr. Jack Passion here has both. The beardiest man in the world, author of the bible of facial hair and the MC at the first ever National Beard and Moustache Championships.
  13. Good grammar. Please.
  14. Fruit. Not the most exciting of foodstuffs, but man, a good peach is worth its weight in gold.
