my brother the architect (mentioned in this post) has 444 folders with 5,700 pictures on his computer sorted by name & date of rad architects, houses & buildings. i forced him to give me a copy (not really, he gave it to me out of the goodness of his heart) and now i’m going to share ten of my favourites.
if you like this kind of stuff make sure to explore the modernist architecture tag

bruynzeel house in stellenbosch by aardt bijl, 1962
this is an incredibly well-known house in my hometown of stellenbosch that’s in the same neighbourhood as my parent’s place. i always see the angled roof sticking up out of the trees when i drive around there. there are many houses in this neighbourhood that have the same modernist feel (albeit not such a dramatic design) – lots of wood inside, with cleverly designed built-in cupboards and bookshelves that separate open plan living areas. basically my dream homes! unfortunately new people who move into the area are starting to tear these houses down and building generic tuscan style pieces of poo in their place.
on a side note – we are always highly amused by famous architects who wear those glasses.

Did you see the movie, The Single Man with Colin Firth. It was filmed in the most amazing house that would fit right in with these. I love all of them!
Here is the link for the house in that movie.

Ee, the Irwin Miller House’s sunken couch instantly reminded me of John Lennon’s bed in Help! I always conveted the Beatles’ house in that film (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1337155426247&set=o.259363826590)
Love the herringbone floors. The Gehry House is my new dream home.
Swoon! You’re a girl of my own heart, Miss Moss.
Good lord, the windows in the Hanna house! Weak. In. The. Knees.

Beautiful home of norwegian architect Arne Korsmo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arne_Korsmo) for sale in Norway. He only lived there a couple of years until he divorced his wife – famous Norwegian designer Grete Prytz Kittelsen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grete_Prytz_Kittelsen).
Wonderful building bordering the famous Norwegian Holmenkollen Ski Jump Hill and vast forests north of Oslo.

I’m blown away by that in-ground seating area that sort of looks like a cozy indoor hot tub beckoning me. Not only does it allow for the huge window wall to be an unobstructed view, but it is piiiiimp…to put it as clearly as I can. :)
Stunning selection. I am slightly obsessed with 60s & 70s house design (ext & int!) – and love all the clever angles and use of space – something we don’t get much of here in SA!! (I have a book from the USA from the 70s with some of the most amaaazing pics!) :)
