if you’ve been a long time reader you’ll have noticed the many, many redesigns i have undertaken on a whim around here. luckily the current one is probably my favourite, so it’s going to stick for a long while. but the one thing i don’t really bother with – or rather, never wanted to tackle – was a logo for the blog. it’s so hard designing for yourself, let alone trying to put your, erm, personality into a logo. i always let the content of the site speak for itself and tried to keep everything else pretty minimal. sometimes i’d go the really lazy route and just type Miss Moss into MyFonts to see what new type would possibly dazzle me. that never worked.
then it’s as if an angel came down from hand-lettered heaven – in the form of Erin Ellis. Erin is a designer & illustrator originally from New Jersey, now living in New Zealand, who specialises in hand lettering. she kindly offered to try her hand (ahem ahem) at a hand-lettered logo for the blog, and needless to say i JUMPED at the chance. i have always been a fan of lettering and beautiful script (did anyone else notice how amazing Nick Carraway’s handwriting was in Baz Luhrman’s Great Gatsby?) – but have never had much of a talent for it myself.
Erin is, as you can see below, a pro. here’s just a snippet from her extensive portfolio:
she whipped up two lettering styles for me – and a few variations of each. Below you will see the two basic styles, and i am totally in love with both of them…
now comes the hard part… which to choose? i thought i’d open it up to the floor and see which version you guys liked more! check out the screenshots below of the different options in context. no.1: option 1 in black; no.2: option 1 in blue (love the blue); no.3: option 2 in black; no.4: option 2 in multi-colour and BONUS OPTION! no.5: option 2 reversed on a watercolour background.
you can click on them to make them to see larger versions.

help me pick my new logo! http://t.co/bvrDSyM8e2 – hand-lettered by the talented @rrrellis
loving #1 & 2! gorgeous options. RT @miss_moss: help me pick my new logo! http://t.co/AMv8VkLCKJ – hand-lettered by the talented @rrrellis
Just LOVE option 1 in black – simple and classy!
Do you really have to pick just one? Can’t you pick say #4 and rotate that with the colors and pretty watercolor bkgnd? They are ALL so awesome!!
They are all so lovely! Have to go with #5 though. Good luck!
I reallllly love option #1! It has so much character and the texture and width of it looks great and contrasts nicely with the design of your site. I wanted to vote for the blue option, but I helped the black stay ahead!
That blue! It’s such a nice contrast to the rest of your site!
Wow, she does beautiful work! I am definitely in awe of such a great hand letterer. At first I was totally sold on the first option. But once I saw them in the little thumbnails of your site it was no. 3 all the way. Very classic but still fresh and not cutesy. That is a seriously talented lady to pack all that into lettering. Love it and can’t wait to see what you pick!
I’m so much in love with hand lettering! Need to give my own fingers some exercise in that area. Loving no 1 along with the majority :)
The lettering of option 3 is beautiful too but feels just a little too thin.
I love all!, you designed it?
no, Erin Ellis did.
Numer 3 and 4! They are beautiful and clean and nice, but I guess I’m not with the majority over here. Good luck picking one! Either way, they are super
these are all exquisite! i think i like number 5 best!

She does incredible work!
Option number one, I say is the best. The thickness of the font just feels right when combined with the rest of your websites layout.
Pay a visit to the awesome @miss_moss blog today! I made her some logos, vote for your fave. http://t.co/Oz3irPEyvf
Vote for the new Miss Moss logo: Can’t decide between 1 and 5. What do you think? http://t.co/MNdZH03Yi2
Oooooo tough choice but definitely options 3-5 the font is classy and this is a classy blog! But I think No. 3 as font is classy but the colouring shows the reader your uniqueness and creativeness and there ‘s a lot more under the surface you just have too look! So No.3 for me! Go Miss Moss!
Hi Diana, I really love your blog. You have magnificent taste.
I like the 2 options in black. Maybe you can try a really dark grey … just an idea.
Have a nice day and I’m looking forward to read your new post.
Love it! I looks gorgeous.
WOW – Thanks for introducing Erin’s work!
I love it, Diana. Just thought I’d throw that out there.

“A New Logo” de Miss Moss — http://t.co/kPkScQod0o
I am also fascinated by beautiful lettering, but also colour: I’d love to see number one in a moss green!
Hi,
I love the first two! Maybe you could use the electric blue option for the Summer season? x
I know how you feel, I’m in the process of rethinking my logo, it is difficult designing for yourself
I love Nick Carraway’s handwriting in The Great Gatsby, and I stumbled upon your site while googling it to try and find out if it’s a usable typeface and what it’s called. Do you know by any chance? PS I love Erin Ellis’ typography and voted for Number 1.
