Totokaelo

i am really loving all the new arrivals at Totokaelo, and especially love how they have styled and shot their products. seeing actual movement makes such a difference, i think. i’m also pretty jealous that the northerners are moving into autumn… my favourite season. glad we will get to experience a snippet of that again next month when we visit NYC.

Elizabeth Suzann

i was so pleased to get an email from Elizabeth Pape introducing me to her line Elizabeth Suzann. a self taught designer, Elizabeth is based in Nashville and her design focuses on simplicity, clean lines, and longevity.

I use all natural fibers – silks, linens, cottons – many of the pieces are hand dyed and painted, and I try very hard to make versatile, seasonless pieces that will serve more than just one function in a wardrobe and can be worn a multitude of ways.  It is my hope that by producing and consuming mindfully, we can focus on craftsmanship, reduce waste, and truly love the clothing we put on our backs. Everything is sewn here in Nashville (by me, currently) and we just this month moved into a studio space so we’ve got some room to grow.

you can see her new studio space here (love me a good studio tour) and shop pieces from the shop on her website. i loooooove that Anais peach watercolour midi dress, as well as this rad charcoal painted silk number. everything is fantastic though, so be sure to have a browse. looking forward to seeing more from Elizabeth in the future.

Cape Town Love

i first noticed Megan & Mike Gilger of The Fresh Exchange when they tagged me in an Instagram photo of their travels in Cape Town – they had been making use of my Cape Town City Guide to discover some cool places to see. i always get the warm and fuzzies when people tell me that the guide helped them in some way, and when anyone visits my city for that matter, so I clicked over to their site and what a nice discovery.

Megan is a talented designer and together she and Mike have a design studio called Wild Measure. on their trip to Cape Town they collaborated with Over to create an app in 24 hours (!!) that with allow people to celebrate their love for Cape Town, featuring Megan’s beautiful hand-lettering, appropriately called Cape Town Love.

The app was inspired by the city we have been working in for the past 6 days, and we wanted to develop something that did not just offer another pack of graphics, but meant far more. We wanted to find a way to celebrate the Mother City, and to help encourage people to discover the beauty that we have found in this place.

read about how they created the app in 24 hours here and watch a short video by Megan and Over designer Aaron Marshall. the app itself is great to look at and a dream to use. i think it’s pretty damn awesome that a handful of talented Americans created such a lovely app that’s so appreciate of our city. download it here.

Pitchouguina

Pitchouguina is a London based label with Russian origins, by designer Anna Pitchouguina. i love the combination of gold and pale pink and grey, and especially love the detailing on many of these pieces – making them interesting yet wearable.

‘Pitchouguina’ is a label based on emotions. It draws inspiration from everyday moments, everyday people, random words, awkward smiles and all the little things that can so easily go unnoticed. We aim to create wearable garments that will make memories and play a subtle but important part in our daily lives. With Russian roots and a studio in London we let our melancholic dreams inspire our clothing. By our own choice we are a little naïve, and maybe a little obsessed.

These Things No 55.

hello! i am currently in the midst of one of the most exciting (and busiest) times of my life. yesterday the awful rain and hail we’ve been having stopped very suddenly, and we were greeted with snow and SUN  - basically the perfect combination – for my bridal shower. my bridesmaids and family and friends went above and beyond to make me feel so incredibly loved (with some laughs thrown in for good measure). as if that wasn’t enough, it is my birthday today. i am 30! it feels good. especially when you wake up to coconut cake in bed.

lastly, we are getting hitched in less than 2 weeks. this is my last week of work and then i’ll be stepping straight into the spiraling vortex of last minute wedding stuff and thingz… after which we leave for NYC for our honeymoon. so things are going to be a bit erratic around here over the next few weeks. i’m going to come out the other end as a Mrs, which is pretty damn rad. perhaps it’s time for a new blog name? while i ponder that, here’s a These Things.

Tuokka by Katja Mustaniemi

Katja Mustaniemi is a creative designer from Finland who designed the Tuokka backpack as part of her final thesis at the Lahti Institute of Design and Fine Arts. it is such a beautiful piece, and i absolutely loved seeing her entire design process on her website. now the question is, where can we buy one?

Inspiration for this work came from deep down – from my childhood in Finnish forests and growing up in scandinavian functionality. I studied the technique of birch bark (basket) weaving and designed and made a backpack with attachable pockets. The pockets also function as additional compartments or separate handbags, and are sized for modern everyday objects like a smartphone and a tablet. Easy and durable closure is created by using magnets and snap fasteners. Material used is recycled leather. My goal was to reproduce a functional and aesthetic product which brings the traditional and historically important craft into the present.

Kuwaii Giveaway!

remember i featured the gorgeous Melbourne home of Kuwaii designer Kristy around this time last year? well now i’m happy to present a giveaway from their new S/S 13-14 Magic Eye collection!

With a perfectly balanced harmony of form and function, the Kuwaii aesthetic is at once both strikingly simple and intricately precise. Clean lines, classic silhouettes, understated detailing and perfect proportions create a sense of effortless beauty. And yet, upon closer inspection a hidden world of subtle intricacies is revealed: a quality of workmanship, fabrics and finishings, refined tailoring and precise techniques. An intelligent study of design and production, which is as much philosophical as it is fashionable.

Kuwaii kindly let me pick 5 of my favourite items, one of which you can win. all you have to do is:

  1. leave a comment telling me which of the 5 pieces is your favourite
