Bird of Paradise

Lilian of online shop BFGF (boyfrengirlfren) shared this amazing collaboration with me that she did with Mary Eleanor Wallace, the owner of Chicago based shop Tusk. the photos were shot by Lillian and her husband Daniel, who are collaborating on some interesting projects under the name Ola Onda. says Lilian,

Tusk is a curated shop based in Chicago selling vintage and handmade items. They have been featured in Elle US and Daily Candy. BFGF is a small online shop that I stock using new, recycled and self created material. For this project Mary Eleanor Wallace the owner of Tusk mailed me vintage clothing and fabric with great patterns to rework into one of a kind tops.

A Collection of Recipes

i have been wanting to share this with you since my kitchen tea in September, my bridesmaids organised a printed book filled with a wonderful collection of recipes collected from all the women in my life. the recipes were either their favourites, ones they knew i’d love, or ones that had a special history (like the Buttermilk Sponge cake that Jessica and i have been baking since primary school, or any of the multitude of recipes my mom included). it was designed by Pauli and illustrated with sweet watercolours by Amy. you can faintly see the embossing on the cover – Miss Moss / Mrs Visser – a long running joke that i should change the name of the blog now that i’m married (i won’t!)

i thought perhaps a nice challenge for 2014 would be to try all the recipes in the book, and possibly share them with all of you. i can’t promise exceptional food photography or styling, but at least you’ll be able to try out my mom’s Malva Pudding, my mother in law’s buttermilk rusks (with coffee in the morning, just the best) or my grandmother’s fudge – which actually made an appearance at our wedding and was a sweet, sweet hit.

Gift Guide No.3

i traversed the deep, dark corners of Etsy to find some cool gift ideas for you. it’s one of the few places that i regularly purchase from as an international buyer. talking directly to the shop owner is convenient, and you can sometimes ask them to leave the price off the package to avoid customs charges (sneaky tip). this is of course only a drop in the ocean of what’s available, they have some pretty cool gift guides themselves, so it’s a nice place to do holiday shopping. support the little guy!

Tata

South Africa is quiet this morning. reflecting on the passing of a man who brought our country together, when it could so easily have gone the other way. i am lucky to have lived in his lifetime, to have witnessed his devotion to his people, and ours to him.

Native Shoes

love this bright, fruity campaign for the SS14 collection of Native Shoes shot by photographer Stephanie Gonot and art directed by Adi Goodrich. i don’t know anything about Native Shoes, but they seem to be some kind of… dare i say it? crocs and sneaker hybrid? except, cooler.

Inspired by classic, casual silhouettes, but made with the lightest and most comfortable material available, native shoes are the best of both worlds. Footwear for the future done in the style of everything we’ve ever loved about shoe design. You can slip them on for a quick stroll, throw them into your backpack for a day at the beach. Our aesthetic is relaxed, flexible and active. Native shoes is footwear for anybody, anywhere, anytime.

Behind the Bed

we currently have this huuuge expanse of white wall behind our bed that’s so bare and sad. i’m just glad i can’t see it when i’m actually lying in bed. but we all know it’s there. what do do? hang a huge painting, perhaps? or lotsa little paintings? or drill some holes and put up a shelf? or a tapestry? or some cool wall sconces? or ALL OF THE ABOVE? we only have one bedroom, so we’re going to have to choose carefully…
