Simon and Mary

Simon and Mary is a Johannesburg based millinery that i have been following with eager anticipation on Instagram, where they have slowly been releasing imagery from their AW14 campaign, launching this year. Simon and Mary has a 70 year history, beginning in 1935 when Simon Pozniak’s father Mordechai brought his cap factory from Poland to Johannesburg. Simon grew the business into Africa’s most renowned wool felt hat factory, and today the fourth generation Pozniak, Dean, is continuing his legacy. the name Simon and Mary comes from Simon’s pet name for his beloved wife Leah, he read the book War & Peace while recovering from heart surgery, and Mary is the lead female character.

Simon and Mary was started as a tribute to my grandparents, built on their history of the finest millinery traditions, family values, craftmanship and creating opportunities that contribute to society. Inspired by the styles created by Simon in the past, we aim to constantly reinvent the hat for the modern hat lover. The milliner title has been passed down from generation to generation. Hats are in our blood, it is more than a clothing item, but rather a way of life.

the first feather in the proverbial felt cap of Simon and Mary is being invited to exhibit at Berlin’s Bread and Butter expo, the only South African brand to do so. it’s being held from 14-16 January, so if you’re in the area and you’re keen to see their wares visit their website for more info.

their AW14 campaign features young professionals, artists, curators, sartorialists, creative spirits, entrepreneurs and hat lovers who love, work and play in Joburg. photographed by Aimee Pozniak and Gareth Place.

Plante

Plante is a NYC based label by sisters Leah and Rebecca Plante. they launched the brand last year with their Spring 2014 collection, which features beautiful pieces like geometric style dresses, plain shorts & camis and some seriously rad overalls.

Plante draws on nature’s wildness, glamour, and beauty—blankets of kudzu flanking the highway, courtyard gardens redolent of tea olive, ancient oak trees draped in moss—and blends inspiration from the city, each edifice drawing awe of human creation. Together, these influences create garments for those who seek special gems, those who value beauty, luxury, detail, and delicacy.

The Stowe

i discovered The Stowe while browsing Craft & Culture, who are one of my sponsors – please have a gander on the right and support these amazing shops! designer Molly Spittal makes my kinda bags: simple, functional, leather, and with minimal hardware and detailing. this was the kind of bag that i was looking for in NYC, but in the end i got a beautiful Clare Vivier messenger (which i am not complaining about). if i was on the market for a new bag i would certainly be considering The Stowe. you can buy them at their online shop or through Craft & Culture.

The Stowe began out of a desire to produce beautiful, functional accessories. Using carefully selected materials sourced in North America, the Montréal-based studio designs products to compliment one’s life. Each hand-made item reflects the values of traditional craftsmanship and classic design.

2014

happy new year! we are still on holiday at the seaside where my family has been spending summers for the past decade. soon we will be road tripping up to the Transkei to spend time with Anton’s family, and we will revisit the spot where we got engaged exactly a year ago. 2013 was such an amazing year for us, so many milestones were met and so many great experiences were thrown our way. we can only hope for a fraction of the same goodness for 2014, so here’s to that! here are some pics of our holiday so far. hope you are having an equally great start to the year.

all pics taken on my iPhone, edited with VSCO. more on Instagram.
