i have a habit of browsing around the internet and then realising, wait – haven’t i posted about this before? and then actually googling my own blog to see if my suspicions are correct (i know, i know). so it went when i was looking through the work of Jenny Parsons, a well know local artist whose work i first shared back in 2010.
For Parsons a landscape painting is a place for the eye and mind to play, where the experience of the landscape and the act of painting hold equal importance. Her work shows a fascination with vertical objects on the landscape: trees, buildings, lampposts and other structures; as well as the “drawings” on the land created by roads, paths and other demarcations. These elements suggest and in fact replace a human presence. The visual conversation between horizontal and vertical, mass and detail, solidity and fragility further explore the human relationship to the land.
Jenny will be exhibiting Michaelis Grad Show in Cape Town tomorrow 3 December, where she just completed a post-graduate diploma in painting. there’s plenty of amazing art to be seen there – so go have a look.
