Sarah McRae Morton is an artist who has lived in Europe since 2010, but often returns to her childhood home in rural Pennsylvania, working in a loft above a horse barn where “a hay hatch casts a net of north light”. i’m going to stop right there and just, well, siiiiigh. her work is heavily influenced by the masters, and the subjects are drawn from her own heritage & artistic lineage.
There is a story behind each of my paintings. Coincidence and unlikelihood are reoccurring themes. They are tales of people long gone but for traces of their genes, a few artefacts like roses they rooted, furniture they tempered, their own graphite scrawl, or silver gelatin shadows. The subjects are drawn from my heritage – that of my family, and of my artistic lineage. I have knotted the two histories using conventions of picture making unique the era of each person to whom I owe a painting as a thanks for my chances and their gusts of curiosity. “The Past is not dead, it is not even past” – William Faulkner
you can see all her work on her website and the Dowling Walsh Gallery.
