i first visited Barcelona on vacation back in 2007 – pre-social media days. i was so excited by what a cool city it was, but also overwhelmed because i didn’t know how to tap into and find the real coolness of the city beyond the touristy stuff. there was no twitter or blogging world to help me find the real delights, as recommended by locals or seasoned visitors, and i didn’t know anyone who lived there who could show me around. that’s one of the main reasons i would love to go back and experience it all over again, travelling in the time of the internet and city guides is so awesome.
the reason for the incredibly rambling intro is because so much cool stuff comes out of Barcelona, the people who live and work there seem to be in another league creatively. one of those people is Julia Breiter, a German designer who opened a vintage shop called Über den Wolken in the Raval neighbourhood 4 years ago, and slowly expanded from upcycling vintage items to making her own pieces. she’s just officially launched her own brand with a Kickstarter campaign.
I design what I want to wear and what I think is beautiful and important. This makes my pieces much less complex (I avoid zippers, buttons, etc. wherever I can), more basic (they can be combined in many different ways to completely change their ¨look¨) and exceptionally comfortable (you can move around freely in all my pieces, elastic bands and knots are fundamental elements in all my collections). All my pieces are hand sewn and my focus is not on machine-straight-hemlines but on what makes one piece different and unique.
