did you see the marni pre-fall 2012 collection? i feel like this was swept under the rug a bit, or perhaps i wasn’t paying attention (probably the latter) – but this is one crazy collection. when i browsed through the different looks i felt like i was meeting someone’s eccentric old aunt. you know, the outspoken one with the radical dress sense who embarrasses all the old folks at family gatherings (but who all the young kids love). i guess marni has always been that way.

i love all the pieces. the shoes, the bags, the belts, the prints, the sunglasses (!) … if you look at them separately it’s not all so mind-boggling. hey, i’m not knocking marni’s styling – it is what it always is, and it’s great. maybe don’t wear it all at once though? actually do, if you can. more power to you. i know Iris would. it would be like living in a Matisse.

Mother

i spotted a shot from the Mother collection on Pinterest – uncredited, of course, grrrrr – but it wasn’t until this post on Style Bubble that i learned that this is the new range from Yokoo (of hand-knitted scarves and accessories fame).

Mother stems from the desire to rid the fashion world of the notion that modern feminism is the absence of femininity. I wanted to design clothes for true feminist. Women who are not afraid to be women. Women who don’t muster up the courage to say, “yes” but feel quite comfortable in the ease of saying, “no.” Mother stands for an authoritative approach to femininity. In nature, the more unseen a power, the more of an authoritative the role.

one of my new years resolutions should probably have been to stop complaining about the heat. i live in africa, i have done for 28 years, i need to get over it. WELL. that will never happen. i actually day dream about the cold. i look at pictures of girls wearing crisp camel coloured coats and actually get kind of weepy. i am particularly drawn to the lovely dark mix of blacks, browns and navy… accessorised with beautiful leather bags and jaunty hats. sigh.
