i received the most incredible mail from sally yesterday – she says,

I loved your post about Life photos from Princeton in 1969! I figured if you’re into that kind of photography, you might interested in a resource I found. The University of North Carolina, the school I attended, has apparently archived all of its yearbooks online (well, from the 1890s up to the 1970s) here. I know it’s just another school in the Southern US and may not immediately appeal (although it is the oldest public school in the US! With one of the most beautiful campuses and the BEST basketball team in the country, if I may say so :), but I think the photos and fashion found within are on par with those in the Princeton article.

jeesy creesy – talk about an understatement, sally! the first year i explored was 1970 (still can’t shake the seventies fever guys) and i immediately started saving pics – revelling in all the cool campus girls… until i saw the incredibly creative yearbook photos of the college sororities & frat houses. ding ding ding. all i can say is, i would have been the motorcycle gang frat house groupie.

needless to say i will be revisiting this incredible resource & sharing more soon enough. be sure to check out sally’s post about the yearbook pics here – a great read & loads of pics.

the dead photog project

i think it goes without saying how much i love the dead photographers project

Deadphotographers is a forever expanding collection of images which explore the relationship of photography and our changing time while aiming to prove the theory that everyone has a good photograph in them. The project is curated by James Dodd, a UK based photographer, who uses his father’s removals company as the only source of discovering the photographs.

Each photograph is collected through house clearances of the deceased, where unwanted items are discarded, including whole photography archives of the once keen photographers. The experience, skills and styles of the photgraphers range vastly. But with most there is a sense of love of their subjects and of the activity they once pursued.

Most collections are cared for, dated and ordered to some level, and kept securely, only to see them quickly discarded along with other once loved trinkets as soon as they pass. If they didn’t become part of this collection, they would simply be disposed of and never see the light of day again.

lipstick

remember that scene early on in the first season of mad men where the secretaries get to try out lipstick colours and joan shows off her derrière in the two-way mirror? of course you do. god, i miss mad men. anyway – perhaps the show’s writers found inspiration from these photos. i love this stern little man – he’s either super serious about his job, or really hates lipstick. or he’s super serious about lipstick.

i had a dream the other night that christy turlington was working at my local pharmacy and she helped me pick out a new lipstick colour. it was a really dark plum colour. i woke up thinking – what are you trying to tell me, christy?
