nice things no.4 – art related edition.

spotted this picture on jessica’s tumblr and immediately began a hunt to find the maker. let me take this opportunity to tell you about a handy tool that allows you to track down the original source for images you may find on places like tumblr, pinterest, ffffound, we heart it etc – places that are notorious for sharing content without crediting the original artist / photographer / blogger. i’ve been using src img ever since kristina tweeted about it and it really does work!
anyway so, Mermaid (or Rusalka in russian). this is was shot by Nika Kurnosova with Olga Moskvina as the mermaid. what a beautiful and ambitious shoot, something i’d expect to see on the pages of Vogue – quite Annie Leibovitz-esque.

it’s a public holiday today in south africa and i’m officially on holiday! which means i now have to start doing my christmas shopping. as much as i inwardly groan thinking about the crowds, truth is i love giving people gifts. and, well, i enjoy receiving gifts too… here are a few things from my sponsors i would love to find in my christmas stocking.
a special secret edition necklace by Erica Weiner for Of a Kind – you have to be a subscriber to their newsletter to shop this one. i love receiving their newsletter every friday to see the new editions.

new pink marbled leather pieces at Ann-Ya. YES!

MOR perfume oils at Eden. i would want these based on packaging alone.

vintage brooches from Jean Jean Vintage

any and all dresses at Edelweiss by Sarah.

ruby lingerie set at Fortnight Lingerie (high waisted panties = yes)

because of the time difference between south africa and the rest of the world i usually have the pleasure to wake up to a few interesting emails every morning. today was no exception, as i clicked through to Industry of One…
Industry of One is a periodical on the wears of work created by Adam Patrick Jones and Rachel Brown. Here and now again they will explore the style trappings of various industries + professions and document the relationship between one’s line of work + walk of life.
man, i LOVE projects like this – as i’ve said before getting to know ordinary people is much more interesting to me than reading a profile on some celebrity who has been styled to the nines (other good examples would be grain & gram, closet visit, freunde von freunden, the locals, the makers… feel free to share more you know of!) i particularly loved their story on librarian grace smith who “would prefer to read on good old fashioned paper thank you very much.”

had some fun with a few looks from the beautiful Thakoon pre-fall 2012 collection. click on them to go big.

my pinterest obsession reached a peak at one stage and has now mellowed down to occasional pinning in order to remember interesting things i’ve seen around (that i usually don’t blog about) – mostly great design work that usually makes me quite jealous of awesomely talented people. this first quote in particular is at the forefront of my mind, obviously for the cool hand lettering – but more-so because of the message.
this time of year always leaves me thinking, what next? what didn’t i do in the past twelve months that i should have and could have done already? it’s sort of sad to admit your shortcomings but also exciting to think that you could do anything you wanted to today, not tomorrow. i’m a master procrastinator and i often let my calendar make excuses for me – i’ll start on monday, next week, next month, in the new year. this is a handy reminder not to let it control you.
of course pinning doesn’t help my procrastination habit, which is why the second quote is applicable.
hey! wow, i haven’t posted in a few days, huh? we had our year-end christmas party last week friday and that is ALL to blame. spent the entire day preparing, then ate and drank too much as reward. subsequently spent the entire weekend on the couch watching masterchef australia and playing video games (the shame – oh the shame).
but i have a these things for you to make up for it.

i discovered australian label Dress Up while browsing through the website of studio And, who designed the beautiful A/W 11 lookbook. so many things i love about fashion and design are completely encapsulated here.
Once described as clothes for ‘the girl who thinks’, Dress Up is subtle, private and considered in its every detail. The label was conceived in 2006, by designer Stephanie Downey. Driven by a desire to create clothing that reflects human emotion, hers is a more sensitive, artistic approach to fashion. When we ‘dress up’, countless images learned and copied are compiled to create something personal and unique. Dress Up is inspired by this inherent human expression, both powerful and vulnerable.
