Katherine Hooker

the second i saw this first look by katherine hooker i thought out of africa – which is kind of appropriate since katherine was born to american parents in cyprus, raised in north africa and moved to england at the age of 9.  she creates timeless handmade pieces using only the very best tweeds for winter and silks and linens for summer. pieces can be custom made or bought from her ready-to-wear range.

A Sleep & A Forgetting

Islands has long been one of my favourite bands (Nick Thorburn’s side project Human Highway is also one of my very favourite things to listen to) – so i was very excited to hear the new album A Sleep & A Forgetting. it has been on repeat ever since. well, it’s been on rotation along with first aid kit. Thorburn started writing the album after breaking up with his longtime partner… so fans of Islands will no doubt recognise that it is quite different from Return to the Sea or Arm’s Way.

“This album is far more personal than any I’ve made before,” Thorburn explains. “I left New York after the end of a relationship and came to Los Angeles. There was a piano where I was staying and that’s where I wrote these songs. This record deals with loss, with memory and forgetting and with dreaming. I started writing it on Valentine’s Day and its coming out on Valentine’s Day.”

you can listen to the entire album here on their record label’s soundcloud.

Quick & Easy

MAN things have been pretty busy for me lately, which is why things are kinda slow around here this week – i do apologise. at the end of the month i will be moving into my new place (yippee!) and going semi-freelance, which is quite scary but also really exciting. that also means i’ll finally have more time to blog.

when i have busy weeks like this i completely neglect myself health wise. i don’t take much time to cook at the best of times (i have spoken about my food laziness before) but when i have no time to even think about food, let alone make it, i end up eating terribly terribly unhealthy things just to keep going. i could go days eating just white toast with bovril if i had to. but that of course takes its toll, and when you really need the energy it’s not wise to skimp on the veggies, eh?

so here are some food ideas for when you find yourself with no time to cook, but you don’t want to possibly die of scurvy. oh and please share any of your own quick & easy recipes and ideas in the comments!

edit: for everyone asking about the typefaces – i used Hera Big & Brandon Grotesque

please click on the images to be taken to the recipes and their creators

Beatenberg

couldn’t find a great pic of them so i just made this up

continuing with my music sharing, i thought i’d introduce you to Beatenberg – a band from good ol’ Cape Town, South Africa. if you’re a local you have probably heard of these guys and may have been lucky enough to see them live. if you are one of my international readers perhaps you haven’t heard of them, in which case – enjoy. if you’re into a paul simonesque / vampire weekendy / john mayerish (minus the douchebaginess) sorta sound then this is for you.

check out Beatenberg on soundcloud, twitter, facebookyoutube and buy their album Farm Photos too.

[for those of you reading via RSS there are some tunes embedded below. click through to listen]
