Pichulik SS14

One of my FAVOURITE creative duos, photographer Alix-Rose Cowie and stylist slash advertising whizz gal slash most fashionable girl in Cape Town Kate Desmarais have created a beautiful lookbook for local jewellery range Pichulik. I’m blogging about this from NYC, because I couldn’t wait, but also because even though I am surrounded by cool shit over here – I’m really, REALLY proud of what’s going on back home. I am reminded of that every day as we walk the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan.

necklaces – Pichulik, photographer – Alix-Rose Cowie, stylist – Kate Desmarais, location – Chandler House. please see Kate’s blog for all the clothing credits.

ps: I am blogging from my iPad, which – as it turns out – is not as easy as I thought it would be. this post may or may not have taken me the better part of an hour.

Pichulik

Katherine-Mary Pichulik is a multi-talented local lass from Cape Town – she trained as a pastry chef, dabbled in the art world, worked on organic farms from Barcelona to Granada… then she started making jewellery after a backpacking trip to India. says Kat,

From a young age I have always been rather crafty assembling random objects together to adorn my chest. Now from a mere hobby it as refined into a 7 somewhat collection-excuding a few wildcards reserved for jewish grannies and other eccentrics alike.

this is her debut collection, shot by blog favourite Alix-Rose Cowie. you can find Pichulik at Mr & Mrs, Take Care and The Fringe Arts all on Kloof street.

Off-Kilter

i’m really excited to offer you an exclusive first look at the new shoot from Kate and Alix (who you will remember from their last venture Fancy Pants)

For our first shoot of 2012 we wanted to play with the idea of asymmetry which is how we came up with the title Off-Kilter. We loved the fact that it had dual meanings and wanted to find clothes that would represent both. David West was kind enough to let us raid his archives (we were like kids in a candy store) where we chose our favourite pieces from his past and present collections.

besides doing self-motivated shoots that could rival anything i have seen in local magazines, Kate and Alix blog for It’s What I’m Into and 10and5 respectively – follow them on twitter here and here.

Fancy Pants

kate and alix-rose are two talented cape town locals who i’ve come to know via twitter (the internet never ceases to bring me joy it seems). kate is a copywriter with a great penchant for fashion, and alix-rose is a photographer whose work i’m always excited to see over at her blog. they’ve done some pretty awesome self-motivated shoots before, so i was thrilled when kate asked if i’d like to feature their latest collaboration. which. is. amazing. i might have said “holy eff balls” when i first got a sneak peak. the colour palettes alone are enough to make me weak at the knees.

Fancy Pants. photographed by alix-rose cowie, styled by kate desmarais, modeled by lee-anne johnson, cover page by michael tymbios (who i previously posted about here). the shoot took place at cape town city hall (which is the most exquisite location i’ve seen in a while) and much of the clothing was sourced from nice people at the You Me and Everyone We Know market – the last one of the season is happening this friday.

hey, fashion magazine editors – are you reading this? you should snap up these two. stat.

please click on the images to see them in all their glory.

alix: things i like right now

things i like right now by alix of unfashionable / alix is for hire

  1. The Runaways – 70s Rock ‘n Roll played by wayward teenage girls
  2. Denim on Denim ala George Harrison
  3. Cape Town jewellery design label Oh Dear, Megan by Megan Fogarty – In love with this particular ring, she has used the inside of a vintage watch to make it.
  4. Working from home
  5. Rock biographies – Just finished “I was Keith Richards’ drug dealer” by Tony Sanchez. Eye-opening.
  6. The photography of 17 year old Australian, Nirrimi. – At 17 I might’ve had hobbies but this girl has a career. She has just shot for the Diesel ‘Be Stupid’ catalogue.
  7. My new specs – Only found out a week ago that I need to wear glasses. The novelty hasn’t worn off yet so I’m like a kid with a new toy.
  8. Top knots – Ever-convenient and they somehow make you look slimmer, weird.
  9. Rose printed upholstery – In my early teens I was so ashamed of the out-of-date rose printed couches we had in our lounge. Now l want them to be left to me!
  10. Thomas Pepler’s film photography – Local Cape Town designer with an incredible eye for photography. Jealousy-inducing.
