Visiting Amy

i’ve spoken about my friend Amy before on the blog – you’ll be familiar with her famous collages if you’re a regular visitor. she has the best taste out of any person i know, and that is a fact. some might say she taught me everything i know. so when Kate and i were musing about who she should do her next house call series on (she blogs for local site its what i’m into) i suggested amz, as she is currently living in a mega cute cottage in the seaside village of kalk bay.

amz has a knack for quickly making any space she occupies into a home – when we lived together in a tiny, tiny room in london (harry potter’s cupboard would not be an exaggeration) she managed to make it cosy & liveable. then later on when we shared a (luckily) bigger flat she filled it up with tons of beautiful wooden furniture – many of which were handmade by her dad. you can see some of his pieces in these photos, the kitchen table notably (love those tapered legs) as well as the laptop tray (brilliant) and the bedside lamp (i have on too).

Master Collagist

i have told you about my friend amy before (see her things i like right now to spruce your memory.)  i have dubbed her Master Collagist. since our first year together in university 9 odd years ago now, amz has made books full of collages to inspire her. people actually stole these books – that’s how nice they were. she came to visit me this weekend and i asked her to bring some of her old books along so i could scan some pages in (will be sharing those in due course.) she ended up making an entirely new collage in her giant A3 moleskine sketchbook based on fashion and other stuff she’s enjoying right now. good times, noodle salad.

amy: things i like right now

amy and i met each other in our first year of university where we both studied graphic design. i can’t tell you how many hours we spent drinking coffee on campus, ‘working’ in front of the tv while watching period dramas, driving around in her eighties honda ballade despite its odd smell… we have traveled overseas together, shared a room the size of harry potter’s cupboard, attempted to encourage each other in various exercise regimes (if you gym, i’ll gym) – the list goes on and on. a great friend who i am very fortunate to know.

  1. Will’s sandwiches at Field Office. My best is the haloumi and mexican salsa served on rye.
  2. My Hungarian Viszla Sophie. She is the best pooch around. Photo by Desmond le Roux
  3. Pedersen and Lennard hook. Super handy and so beautiful.
  4. Gold Toms. My friend Mariah has them and they make me jealous every time she puts them on.
  5. Chapel Bags. By my friend Caleb.
  6. Bridle Road Residence in Cape Town. Because the pool is green, the garden is big and they have ridgebacks.
  7. Isabel Marant. My favourite fashion designer - I dream of wearing her one day.
  8. David West’s latest collection. Proudly South African.
  9. Sticker wallpaper from Peyton Turner. Each wallpaper pattern is made up of thousands of hand-applied stickers, and can be removed and re-applied in any space. Who doesn’t like a sticker.
  10. Air plants. Because they don’t need so much water. Photo by Masaaki Sano
  11. Dale Lawrence. My favourite artist right now.
  12. Ryan McGinley. Makes naked look so good.
  13. Elsabe Milandri. She makes ink drawing look easy and such a free and easy style. Her subject matter is always thought provoking yet true to her roots.
  14. Old Cape Town photos. I am a history nut & could read about the history of Cape Town all day. It has changed so much and we have lost so much history, yet people don’t seem to care.
