Samuli Heimonen: There is often something bigger than the human in my paintings. It may be an object, an animal or a construction. Most of the time people are part of that construction and live, as if, inside it and on its surfaces. My starting point is to show how things relate to people and how we humans interact…. The paintings are suggestions for possible worlds.

It was just over a year ago, eating a bowl of Moules et Frits, on holiday in Paris with my girlfriend Liz, that I realised I could quite easily spend the rest of my life with her. I just needed the right way of asking the question, and a bit of time to work it all out. One definite intention was proposing through illustration. I’d like to think of it as two of my favourite things in life in coming together for the one goal.

Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (1832 – 1898) was a Russian landscape painter, his method was based on analytical studies of nature. He became famous for his forest landscapes, and was also an outstanding draftsman and a printmaker. His works are notable for poetic depiction of seasons in the woods, wild nature, animals and birds.
