from utilitarian to luxury, from sensible to chic, the evolution of air travel is one of the most dramatic and fascinating reflections of our changing culture, and it is colorfully and whimsically documented in this unique collection of photographs and entertaining text.

boy castaways

The author and dramatist J. M. Barrie created this adventure story in 1901 for the Llewelyn Davies family. Barrie befriended the Llewelyn Davies family in the 1890s and his famous character Peter Pan was inspired by the children. Barrie published only two copies of the story – one copy, given to the boys’ parents, was misplaced on a train in 1901. The only other remaining copy is held at the Beinecke Library. An inscription by Barrie reads: “There was one other copy of this book only and it was lost in a railway train in 1901.”

old nectar

Una van der Spuy is 98 years old and she just published another book about gardening – her own garden in fact, at Old Nectar in Stellenbosch. one of the most beautiful gardens in the country, and the only private garden to be declared a national monument. still working in your garden at 98, let alone writing a book about it, is just incredible – i would love to meet her & see her amazing garden one day. the book is Old Nectar: a garden for all seasons

Paris 48°50N 2°23E

in each city ami asks 50 of its inhabitants to hand-draw a map to a place of their choosing, a place that is significant or important to them personally, for any reason. she then uses the maps to navigate to each location and take a photograph to represent each location. the ° books portray a side of each city as interpreted by those who live and work in it every day. its not a “guide” to the new café or club, but rather, a unique way of discovering different parts of the city.

bear love.

farewellbear_for_mikka_by_iphigen

dear friends, please read this message, don’t skip it. on 27th december 2008, my husband Mikka died. he was robbed and thrown to the river. some of you could have known him or have seen his wonderful and poetic b&w photographs of his daily life.I decided to do a book in memory of him. the little bear’s book. in russian it is Мишкина книжка (Mishkina knizhka) what has double meaning – the little bear’s book and Misha’s book (that is Mikka’s real name). I ask everyone to take part and draw little bear for Mikka or for our 1 year old daughter who could watch them all later when she gets older. doesn’t metter if you are skilled in drawing or not. just do it with your heart.

if you feel like sending her a bear, check out million dandelions at deviantart
