New York Stories

you know i’m a tart for anything inspired by colour, so i was really happy to discover a collaboration between stylist Marcus Hay & photographer Kat Teutsch on a wonderful series called New York Storiesself styled shoots inspired by the lives of fictional ladies in New York City. says Marcus,

I have for a long time wanted to a series of color based stories inspired by fictional characters, eccentric hybrids of personalities I know or admire from a distance in New York. These shoots are produced as a result of meeting or observing from afar the array of characters here, constantly I am inspired by just a glimpse of someone on the street who you know has a long story to tell. New York is famous for its eccentric personalities and thankfully the city is still full of them! Kat and I get a kick out of having a narrative to work from and the possibilities are endless, watch out for some more of our ladies!

they have three stories so far – the blue & green hued Edna Indigo Greenleaf; the rose & citrus story of Goldie Rose Smyth; and the super cool black & gold story of Ophelia Sable Le Blanc (my favourite, which you’ll see below). be sure to check out the rest either at Marcus’ blog or Kat’s website.

Ophelia Sable Le Blanc, Born May 12th, 1952

Ophelia grew up in affluent Chicago suburb of Oak Park, while she did not live in a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright of whom designed many of the houses and buildings of more prominent folk, she always wished she had.

An Architectural buff, Ophelia had dreams of attending school for Architecture but somehow never managed to get there settling instead in New York where she was attracted to mood of the 1960’s where her jet black bob and big charcoaled eyes made an impression at the Fashion Magazines where she worked in the Art Department eventually building her way up to a Director position.

Partly retired now, Ophelia still dabbles in Design and holds classes at a prominent Design School for Graphic Design. She loves her coffee black and her cocktails strong, her signature black bowler hat makes an appearance at times when the mood is upon her.

Things That Go Together

i have been seduced by some beautiful imagery online in the past week, and especially things that go together. 1. this lady’s impeccable style in the moment – there’s nothing quite like a camel coat. 2. Loeffler Randall’s amazing new pre-fall booties. i haven’t wanted new shoes this badly in a while. 3. the leather skirt and infectious smile of Monica Paolini. 4. these watches by VOID – in every colour, please (but especially the brown). 5.  the industrial collection at Bodie & Fou. 6. clipping details over at the Rijksmuseum. 7. Gorgeous kitty by Aurore de La Morinerie8. Another lovely cat, by Mathilde. 9. the fashion stylings of Nanushka. 10. ink on paper by Malin Gabriella Nordin. 11. the Paris apartment of Clarisse and Lucile Demory.

Mara & Maria

i had a bit of a scare this weekend, the blog was down for more almost two days and i didn’t know how to fix it. it’s terrible feeling so helpless, but above all i was really worried that three years of fun and radness was going to disappear forever into the depths of the internet blackhole. luckily Jason came to my rescue – a guy who knows his web stuff, so if you ever need help in that department give him a call.

while i sat at my computer hitting refresh over and over and over, willing the blog to come back to life, i thought about what i would do if i was ever faced with the prospect of writing my last post… a last meal of sorts. and over the years nothing has made me happier than a good ol’ colour comparison. so that’s the first thing i did when i sat down at my computer this morning.

new york fashion week has been all over the blogs, twitter, instagram – and probably my favourite show out of the very many lovely collections was Mara Hoffman’s Spring 2013 collection. something about Mara’s symmetrical prints and bright palette reminds me of the colourful work of Ukrainian folk artist & decorative painter Maria Primachenko.

Matisse & Me

“I wouldn’t mind turning into a vermilion goldfish.” – Henri Matisse

my top 10 lists are always changing – top 10 bands i want to see live (daft punk & arcade fire are usually in there), top 10 hottie actors (hello jon hamm, hello javier bardem), top 10 foods i would choose as my last meal (that is a particularly tough one) …but some of my top 10 famous artists are pretty easy to nail down: gauguin, van gogh, odilon redon, cezanne, rousseau, chagall, picasso and matisse amongst others. all at their most colourful periods.

so when my boyfriend told me he was going to see a matisse exhibition at the pompidou in paris i was quite jealous (also because i wasn’t in paris, really). the exhibition is called Matisse Pairs and Sets and it boasts 90 of his works that show how he would paint or draw the same subject over and over in different ways. he once said, “I do not literally paint that table, but the emotion it produces upon me.” it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see all these works collected in one place,  so if you’re in the area go check it out – it’s running until 18 June.

since i couldn’t be there (grumble grumble) i decided to look through his amazing body of work, and then i started seeing bits of Matisse everywhere.

Paris in Colour

whenever i’m daydreaming about fantasy holidays, looking through the directories of beautiful hotels or checking out cheap flights, my mind always wanders back to paris. i have visited the city a number of times, but i can’t seem to get enough of it – you can keep your tropical islands and skiing holidays, all i want is the chance to visit paris again.

Paris in Colour might just satisfy my eternal paris cravings, especially because Nichole Robertson journeys through the city and captures it by colour. you might know her from her blog where she has been sharing bits of paris in colour since she moved there in 2009. you can read more about the project here.
