givenchy s/s 2011 couture

leeloo dallas multi-pass! that’s the first thing i thought when i saw the givenchy spring couture collection. the design detail & tailoring is simply astounding.

One outfit required 2,000 hours of cutting and 4,000 hours of sewing. A single pair of trousers had 90 meters of plissé. On this scale, appreciation of the clothes as they solemnly rotated from hangers in a reverentially hushed salon on the Place Vendôme became an almost academic exercise, like examining works of art in a gallery.

fanakalo

jan and rohan run a graphic design company called fanakalo in my hometown of stellenbosch. i regularly see their designs when i’m walking around town, especially on posters for local markets and on many a south african wine.

i LOVE this wine label design they did for helderberg wijnmakerij. i remember seeing it for the first time when i was wandering around in my supermarket’s wine section trying to decide what to get. living in the winelands means we are spoilt for choice & on top of that i’m a total wine heathen… i don’t really know what is good or not (when it’s cheap it’s bad, right?)  THEN i saw this bottle and picked it up right away. another case of judging a book (slash wine) by its cover – this usually works out for me, though. if something has a great design 99% of the time the product is great too.

the rest of their work is wonderful too…

present + correct

sometimes i wonder what it would be like if we could go back to school as our adult selves, without all the worries that plagued us as teenagers. man, we were idiots! oh you think you weren’t but you actually were, sorry to break it to you.

i would for one thing have had better stationery. no more space cases with shit drawn all over them. i would have been a proper person with rad stationery. these are by present + correct (also at etsy)

i realised after i’d written this post that space cases might already be irrelevant, or probably don’t make sense to anyone outside south africa. well, they were the pencil boxes to have in my day. i remember when i was 12 years old space cases suddenly hit the scene – people went bananas for them. and they were actually big enough to fit bananas in.
