humans

samuli heimonen

Samuli Heimonen: There is often something bigger than the human in my paintings. It may be an object, an animal or a construction. Most of the time people are part of that construction and live, as if, inside it and on its surfaces. My starting point is to show how things relate to people and how we humans interact…. The paintings are suggestions for possible worlds.

My work mines the debris of memory through the creation of intricate worlds sculpted in 1:43 scale and smaller. Often sealed under glass, the works depict the remnants of things past—whether major, transformational experiences, or the quieter moments that resonate loudly throughout a life. In much the way the mind recalls events through the fog of time, the works distort reality through a warped and dreamlike lens.

Working with common themes such as transition, aging, isolation, and loss, I am interested in the fragility of relationships and the awkwardness of a group of people trying to coexist and relate to one another. To that end I create miniature 3D models to serve as evolving still lifes from which I paint detailed narrative paintings.

guys,  she builds the models… and then she paints them. wow wow. visit amy bennett’s website.
