i watched this Etsy interview with illustrator Sophie Blackall over a cup of coffee this morning and it left me feeling so incredibly happy and warm. she has such a wonderfully inviting and serene way of talking about her work…

“i like drawing animals, but i’m ashamed to say i almost always want to put clothes on them”

you’ve probably heard about her project Missed Connections where she illustrates stories from the missed connections section of Craigslist (which is now available as a book). if you haven’t definitely have a browse through her blog, and also check out her new project Drawn from my Father’s Adventures.

Bernadette Pascua is an illustrator based in brooklyn whose wonderful work i simply cannot get enough of. i highly recommend that you follow her blog and also have a gander at her tumblr. she and her boyfriend also have a seriously rad apartment, obviously.

“I read a lot of mythology, or tragic stories online. If I read something I could translate into an illustration, I instantly brainstorm in my Moleskin with a Staedtler pencil, or sometimes a Sharpie pen. When I find that I’ve accomplished the story told in its simplest way, I transfer that onto large sketch paper. When the drawing is finished, I scan and color it in Photoshop.” - via ape on the moon

i will always remember my illustration lecturer at university telling us repeatedly that the best illustrators and comic book artists always had their sketchbook with them, and were always drawing. any spare moment was spent observing, sketching and perfecting their craft. that is of course completely true and a philosophy that certainly applies to any skill.

so i was immediately taken back to that classroom when i saw the pages of Wil Freeborn’s incredible sketchbooks. had mixed feelings of admiration and jealousy when browsing through these – what a talent.

i don’t know how i hadn’t seen these until now. adam simpson was commissioned to do an interpretation of the five best film nominees for the brochure artwork of this year’s BAFTAS (which was on 13 february) – um, WOW!
