Wayne Thiebaud (b. 1920–) is a Californian painter who is best known for his iconic still lifes of all-American foods and products, such as cakes, pies, sandwiches, cosmetics, and toys. He is also celebrated for his vertiginous San Francisco cityscapes and his richly hued views of Northern California. Known for his plain-spoken style and self-deprecating sense of humor, Thiebaud links himself to the long tradition of painting from observation and speaks in defense of painting to audiences regularly.
My art comes from an urge to explore. I like the countryside. I like a good view. And once I’m face to face with a lovely scenery, I feel immediately tempted to find out what it’s concealing. The dark goings-on behind the façade of nature, you might say, or the hidden machinations of the animal kingdom.

barraud was swiss. he worked in paris for a time during the 1920’s and painted mainly still lifes and portraits, including many double portraits featuring himself and his wife. he was one of 4 brothers who all painted or sculpted at one time or another. he suffered several periods of illness during his life and died of tuberculosis in 1934, at the age of 35.
