Pichulik: Baraka

the new Pichulik SS15 range Baraka has just launched, and i’m really into the limited colour palette Kat has gone for. she drew her inspiration from the architecture of North Africa and the Middle East (the name barakah means “blessing” in Arabic)

The colours and designs evoke the religious talismans of the Berber of Morocco and prayer satchels used throughout the region. Green and gold are sacred in Islam as they represent paradise while the blue, the colour of protection, is reminiscent of the indigo robes worn by the Tuareg and the colours found in the 400-year-old Sultan Ahmet Camii, Istanbul’s Blue Mosque.

Lucie de Moyencourt

while i was enjoying the new Pichulik website yesterday i particularly loved their Brave Women series – intimate portraits of the women who wear Pichulik pieces. the first feature is on Lucie de Moyencourt who works as an architect, set designer, illustrator and painter.

lucie de moyencourt was born in 1983 in paris, she grew up in south africa, where she works as an architect, set designer, illustrator and painter. with no formal art training, painting and drawing is something lucie has always done for herself. by observing her subjects very closely, she allows the brush to move around the canvas without giving it much thought, trusting that her hand will do something intuitive to what she is seeing. lucie aims to complete a painting in one sitting, and enjoys working into wet paint with thicker layers of colour. “i paint because i am addicted to the ‘surprise’ that the painted canvas gives me when i step back from the easel”.

Pichulik A14

ooh another of my favourite jewellery designers has just launched their new AW14 collection, and this time it’s local designer Pichulik. i have long been a cheerleader of Kat’s work (since her debut 2 years ago) and love seeing the label go from strength to strength. sporting a fancy new website, it looks like there is an online shop in the works too. in the meantime, you can get your hands on her pieces at plenty of shops locally.

This collection is inspired by the photography of Helmut Newton and his intimate portraits of powerful women in their own personal spaces.  Jewellery is worn close to a woman’s skin, brushes her neck, clasps her earlobe. AW 2014 invites our brave lady on some close up encounters. With jewel tones and wooden parts, suede and agate stones and tassels, this collection skirts the glamour of 70s disco, and the soul of psychedelia. Kick those platforms off and dance on those carpeted floors and wooden-clad lounges till the dawn meets your cat-lined eyes.

Pichulik SS14

One of my FAVOURITE creative duos, photographer Alix-Rose Cowie and stylist slash advertising whizz gal slash most fashionable girl in Cape Town Kate Desmarais have created a beautiful lookbook for local jewellery range Pichulik. I’m blogging about this from NYC, because I couldn’t wait, but also because even though I am surrounded by cool shit over here – I’m really, REALLY proud of what’s going on back home. I am reminded of that every day as we walk the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan.

necklaces – Pichulik, photographer – Alix-Rose Cowie, stylist – Kate Desmarais, location – Chandler House. please see Kate’s blog for all the clothing credits.

ps: I am blogging from my iPad, which – as it turns out – is not as easy as I thought it would be. this post may or may not have taken me the better part of an hour.

Pichulik

Katherine-Mary Pichulik is a multi-talented local lass from Cape Town – she trained as a pastry chef, dabbled in the art world, worked on organic farms from Barcelona to Granada… then she started making jewellery after a backpacking trip to India. says Kat,

From a young age I have always been rather crafty assembling random objects together to adorn my chest. Now from a mere hobby it as refined into a 7 somewhat collection-excuding a few wildcards reserved for jewish grannies and other eccentrics alike.

this is her debut collection, shot by blog favourite Alix-Rose Cowie. you can find Pichulik at Mr & Mrs, Take Care and The Fringe Arts all on Kloof street.
