i’ve been holding out on listening to the new Bon Iver album because i’ve been hearing so much about it online and fear a bit of a build up / let down situation. the same thing happens when i constantly hear about an amazing film, then usually end up only seeing it a year later when all the fuss has died down. i’m sure that the album is amazing and i have nothing to worry about… but, you know, it technically only drops on 21 june. sooo. let’s talk about it then shall we?

unsurprisingly i immediately fell in love with the cover art of both the album and the lead single Calgary, which was created by artist Gregory Euclide (who had been personally commissioned by frontman Justin Vernon). Meighan has a great interview with Gregory over at My Love For You which i urge you to read if you want to know more about his process. it’s also incredibly awesome to see an artist who so readily shares his work & process online – you can explore all his work over at his flickr, and watch his videos documenting the making of his pieces on youtube.

everytime i see a new piece by aj fosik it makes me smile

fosik’s animal subjects and anthropomorphized beings are built using a complex process in which each form is carefully handcrafted by arranging hundreds of pieces of individually cut and varnished wood, which the artist paints in vibrant colors and patterns. sharp teeth, claws, and eyes emerge once the creatures are completed—either constructed as freestanding forms or wall-mounted pieces, referencing modern taxidermy practices.

i have always really loved land art (strijdom van der merwe is a particular favourite), and i know some people might scoff at the concept but most of the time i find it more interesting to look at than traditional sculpture… perhaps it’s just my tiny inner hippy that finds it appealing. i discovered richard shilling recently, imagine going for a walk in the forest and discovering one of these beauties…

in his ongoing series until the kingdom comes, simen johan depicts a natural world hovering between reality, fantasy and nightmare. merging traditional photographic techniques with digital methods, johan’s images are crafted over time and may include a synthesis of landscapes from various geographical locations and animals photographed in captivity or in the wild.
