i’ve never experienced the kind of bitter cold that Canada and other similarly wintery places have to deal with, but something tells me that sitting in an ice fishing hut doesn’t appeal to me much. when i saw this series by photographer Richard Johnson however, i started imagining what my own ice hut would look like… i probably wouldn’t use it for fishing though, perhaps just as a giant freezer? i can store a year’s worth of ice-cream in there.
i was faced with a conundrum when Outlander, the famous series of books Diana Gabaldon began writing 20 years ago, was turned into a TV show – because i hadn’t read them and i have always wanted to. i was saving it for one of those holidays where you devour 5 books in a week while lying on the beach and in between afternoon naps. but i can’t resist a good period drama, especially a steamy one at that.
Lucy Hilmer is a photographer, filmmaker and poet who has filmed and photographed, at regular intervals, the ever changing lives of herself, her family and friends and documented them in multiple long-term series. Birthday Suits, where she photographs herself every year on her birthday wearing nothing but her white Lollipop underpants, shoes, and socks, made me tear up a little. it is just extraordinary.
