Escher & Menswear

i tend to forget that Escher actually did other work besides drawing hands and relativity. his tessellation designs are quite beautiful – i’ve been wanting to pair them with something interesting for some time now.

well i don’t know about you guys, but the street style that’s been snapped at the recent menswear shows in milan and paris have been more fascinating to me than anything else fashion related in recent weeks. the men in particular are so striking and daring in their outfit choices and sartorial combinations (though of course not “daring” at all in fashion circles – merely to us ordinary folk). sometimes i wish men who aren’t in the fashion industry would be more flamboyant and adventurous in the way they dress, without worrying about what people might think. go forth!

Check & Checked

i love plaid, even though it’s a “trend” that’s been around for years now. doubtless i will still love it long after it filters out of every department store. if i see a girl with a nice checked shirt tucked into good jeans or with a pair of well fit trousers i am guaranteed to turn and take a second look. so if you see me staring at you in the street, don’t be alarmed.

Autumn & Everything After

i’ve really noticed autumn in south africa this year. mostly due to the fact that i’ve been on a few drives into the countryside when not couch dwelling, and also making an effort to get outside with my dogs for walkies (they walk me, really). the trees are beautifully red and orange and yellow, the fields are strikingly green, it’s all very fa-la-la i want to run down this hill and collapse into a heap of fallen leaves and giggles at the bottom. you know?

so i decided to dedicate a colour comparisons post to my favourite season, using the artwork of american impressionist john joseph enneking and mashing it up with some rad street style.

* yes the title is totally a counting crows pun. i am not ashamed! this is still one of my favourite songs ever.

The Seeberger Brothers

Modern fashion photography was born when three brothers, Parisian postcard photographers, shifted their lenses to the upper echelon of French society in the early twentieth century. As impromptu portraits of beautiful women in inimitable finery at racecourses, resorts, and cafes began to appear in magazines, courant designers such as Chanel, Hermes, and Madeleine Vionnet rushed to send their models to posh watering holes to be photographed with the beau monde.

so says an excerpt from Elegance: The Seeberger Brothers and the birth of fashion photography. i was on my usual google image searching misadventures when i came upon the first pic in this post, and i instantly started scouring around for more. i vaguely remember the sartorialist talking about this book once upon a time and the pic of that wonderful lady in the menswear perched on top of that fence has been saved to my computer for years… this book seems like a must have. how’s that sofia coppola doppelganger in the second pic? can’t believe this was the thirties.

matching your outfit to your dog? magic.

rainy day special

a series i love so much i actually have to hold myself back from making more. trying to keep these relatively few and far between because i know that if i didn’t they would become boring. it would be like eating pancakes every day. where’s the fun in that? pancakes are so good because you only have them now and then – usually when it’s raining. apparently only a south african / afrikaans thing … or … something only my mom did? consequently not a rainy day goes by without the thought of pancakes now. anyway, i think you get it. colour comparisons = pancakes in this roundabout analogy.

see the rest of the colour comparisons.

ps: it’s not actually raining here, but i hope it is somewhere.
