tv show

boardwalk empire

my new tv obsession is boardwalk empire, which is not surprising since mad men just ended (sad face) and i needed another period drama to fill the void. set in prohibition era atlantic city, the story revolves around nucky thompson - played by the ridiculously awesome and surprisingly… dare i say attractive steve buscemi – and the various gangsters, government agents and ordinary folk whose lives are influenced by the fortunes and misfortunes of bootlegging and other illegal activities

the characters are interesting, the acting is top notch, there’s plenty of nudity and sex (something i always felt mad men kind of lacked, he he) and it is also super violent (scorsese / gansters – what do you expect?) certainly the most impressive thing for me is the set design & the effort that went into recreating atlantic city in the twenties.

the set, which features a 300ft “period-perfect rendition” of Atlantic City in the early 1920s, took three months to build includes depictions of storefronts, cars and the boardwalk itself. after filming, digital effects were used to add details like skylines, billboards, piers and beaches, whose looks were based on vintage postcards.

the costumes are also to die for – look out for the scenes in the dress shop and all the outfits the ladies wear.

teenage shindig

these photos are from Life magazine’s archives: Teenage Music – The Beachboys, The Righteous Brothers,  ABC’s “Shindig” … i’m assuming it’s one of those american tv specials from the late fifties / early sixties where a bunch of kids would gather in a studio & dance wildly to a hip band (think Grease). oh yes, it looks like a ton of fun.

bored to death

“leaking toxins from where?”

bored to death is a new show on HBO. ok wait – this has jason schwartzman, zach galifianakis AND ted danson in it. it also has a great tagline: “a noir-rotic comedy”. i bet it never airs in south africa, or gets cruelly cancelled before it reaches our shores (much like arrested development, or something)

confession: i used to have a total crush on ted danson when i was a kid! yes, something about his dry wit / sarcasm. there was cheers, of course, but i LOVED him in 3 men and a baby / little lady. hah. come on, i was only 7ish. anyway, he’s like the original hugh laurie.

now i have a semi-crush on jason schwartzman and zach galifianakis. don’t really have a type, i guess.

jack gets in the game

30rock

i watched 30 Rock episode season 2 ep 2: “Jack Gets in the game” again yesterday:

Liz: How come men can be heavy and be respected, like James Gandolfini or Fat Albert? It’s a double standard, and America needs to get over its body image madness.
Jack: Oh, come on. What are we, back in college, freshman year? Let’s go to the common room and talk about apartheid.

Devon: Here, why don’t you take some of my steak? I could never eat this much meat.
Jack: That’s not what I hear.

Dr. Leo Spaceman: Now Jenna, medically speaking, for your height your weight puts you in what we call the “disgusting range”.

Liz Lemon: You just can’t be a real woman in this country. God! It’s like those Dove commercials never happened!

Tracy Jordan: My home address is in the GPS under ‘Da Crib’ cos we live on Da Crib Avenue.

there’s also a blink and you’ll miss it scene showing the boxes for Liz’s unassembled home office furniture, with the swedish furniture company’s name on it: Blërg
