Romy & Raphael

oh wow, i just had to share the wedding that photographer Hanni of Troistudios shared in the comments of yesterday’s plants post! Romy & Raphael got married at the Botanical Gardens in Berlin – what a perfect setting for such an intimate ceremony. they also had brunch and a reception at two different locations afterwards, an idea i love that’s quite typical of many german weddings. probably the best wedding i have ever attended was my own brother’s wedding whose wife is german – the celebrations also consisted of several different events spread over a few days. and man, do those germans know how to party.

also just a quick kudos to the bride’s lovely vintage style dress & twenties hairdo. and, of course, the beautiful photography from Hanni & Marcus.

A Wedding in the Loire Valley

okay, if you are a regular reader you will know my feelings re: the wedding industry and that my overall hope is that people would have honest, real weddings without the unnecessary hoopla.

…but, i had to show you this. because it’s so ridiculously fantastical i almost cannot believe it’s real. this couple had a costume themed wedding in a french chateau in the loire valley. if you can afford to have your wedding in a chateau you’re already in another league, but this is simply nuts. the bride’s dress was designed by the same costume designer who created michelle pfeiffer’s costumers in dangerous liasons. they even had fireworks on the balcony! marie antoinette, eat your heart out, eh?

the photography is the work of Shawn Connell of the Christian Oth Studio - the quality of which is not unlike something you might expect to see on the pages of Vogue.

Modern Hearts

i can be a real grump when it comes to the wedding industry. overly elaborate ceremonies, staged props (usually of the cutesy & vintage variety) and terribly cheesy wedding photography that’s photoshopped within an inch of its life makes me sigh audibly. i find most of it completely unnecessary, and it distracts from what the day is supposed to be about. so when i come across honest weddings and, best of all, honest wedding photographers i feel a glimmer of hope.

Deon & Irene are a couple who live in Cape Town and shoot weddings under the moniker Modern Hearts. i first came across their work because they captured the beautiful wedding of my friend Peter-Allan & his wife Nicolene. i also loved the intimate wedding of Gary & Claire that they shot in Durban. really looking forward to seeing more work from these two… if you’re getting married in South Africa one of these days be sure to contact them!

Andrea & Luke

just had to share the wedding of Andrea & Luke at her family’s farm netherwood in the natal midlands photographed by my pal Shanna. that DRESS (designed by Tiaan Nagel) and the beautiful vintage botanical decor are quite special.
