The Art of Vogue Covers

i was given a wonderful gift recently from Anton’s gran, who was cleaning out her book collection and came upon an old copy of The Art of Vogue Covers. it details the illustrated covers of British Vogue from 1909 through to 1940, including the entire collection of covers between 1920-1930. i was only familiar with a few of the illustrated Vogue covers (a handful of which were turned into posters and probably hang in many a college dorm room), so i thought i’d scan in some of my favourites and share them with you.

most of the work showcased in the book are by seasoned Vogue illustrators Helen Dryden, Georges Lepap, Harriett Maserol, George Plank and Eduardo Benito amongst others. if you’d like to see more please let me know and i’ll continue adding them to the flickr collection, this is literally just the tip of the iceberg.

see them all here.

    What a stunning gift!

I have a few of the framed prints, and have been hanging in my room since I was a little girl. They moved with me to my apartment and still look great. Timeless.

    Thanks for sharing!

That’s so weird – my granny LITERALLY just gave me this book while she was clearing out. My favorites are definitely all the George Wolf Plank & Helen Dryden ones…

    Yes, more please!
I’d also love to see you pairing some of these with modern street-style shots/fashion articles, like you do with your food or vintage art sequences. Nos. 2, 8 and 10 in the sequence struck me as styles and stylings that I could really imagine being done again now – and no.5 (that palm tree, Dr Freud!!) reminded me a lot of the 50s photo of the model posing next to an elephant. Great to see good ideas being recycled like that.

Great selection! One of my friends had this book back when we were at art college. I was so envious (having only been able to find the Art of Photographic Vogue covers). I have since collected many other vintage illustration books, but you’ve inspired me to go on a hunt on abe.books for this one. Thanks for posting.
