i found these images while trawling around the LIFE archives, with no explanation as to who took them, when, or where. i’m guessing this was sometime in the twenties or thirties? and it looks like it might have been somewhere in Europe – originally i thought maybe they were Swedes, but that old school Nivea Creme tin made me wonder if they were German. well, looks like they had a pretty good time either way.
our own summer holidays are only 11 days away. EXCITE!
Definitely Sweden with the Brostugan on the boat and the scenery :) Fun pictures!
thanks for picking that up!
Love the rope skipping one and wish it was summer here in London. No gift guide this year? :-)
man i just have not had the motivation to do one! probably because i haaaaate christmas shopping. i’ll try!!
Brostugan means something along the lines of the bridge-hut, and is swedish, yes. Nivea cream was big as a sun-tan lotion here in Norway at the same time. I remember my grandmother using it far in to the 80s. Haha, roasting fat. Lovely photos, and summer feels a looong way away now, with winter storms and few hours of daylight here in the north.
These are beautiful images, in fact this whole bog is amazing!
It’s summer time here in Australia!
Beautiful photos, fabulous fashion and I love the hair styles of that era.
Also how sporty and natural looking the women are. Funny- the hairy arm pit, making it SO European at the time.
I always love your Life Magazine posts.
These photographs are definitely from the 1930s. They are so classic and sporty.
Definitely the opposite of what I’m experiencing in the blistering NY winter cold, but love these photos and I love seeing summer photos at any time of year so thanks for sharing! I love the realness of these.

Definetly swedish! The soda that girl is sipping on – “Apotekarnes sockerdricka” still exists today!
It feel so fresh to look at these types of pictures. I mean, its not like they didn’t have some crazy ideals to live up to in the 1930’s, but the body image feels so much more sane. And these ladies really look like they are real persons, with opinions, flaws and wit, and the whole package.
these are amazing!!
