how amazing are these sculptures by Dutch artist Ron van der Ende! i’ve never been much of a sculpture fan, mostly because i just wouldn’t know where i would put it. and a lot of the stuff you see these days is just weeeeeird. but these are so awesome, and so beautifully made out of salvaged wood. i absolutely love the pieces of wood, made of wood.
In 2000 I came up with a way to construct wall mounted bas-reliefs from salvaged wood. The original colour and texture of the wood is utilised to form a gripping and realistic mosaic, a realism further enhanced by the perspective built into the relief. By now I have built over a hundred of these works with themes ranging from cars and architecture to tree stumps and even a cut of meat. I am interested in artefacts that have once inspired enthusiasm but that we have come to look upon with indifference. I want to reexamine these objects thoroughly and up close. I want to hold them to the light and see how their meaning has changed.
they actually remind me a bit of those Ghanaian funeral coffins. you can see more of his work at his website.
