when i discovered the work of NY based artist Claire Sherman i loved it at first sight – the graphic style & those prominent brush strokes are totally my bag. she actually paints many of these scenes from kitchy nature books. reading more about the story behind her work, she explains…
“It is less about representing a specific place, and more about how paint can create an experience of a space that is both alluring and terrifying. My interest is in a space that falls apart as it begins to congeal and questions our relationship to the conventions of landscape.”
“how paint can create an experience of a space that is both alluring and terrifying” – i looked at her paintings completely differently after reading that. the pieces are also big: Cave, the first image below, is 2.5 x 2 metres in size (or 96 x 78 inches to my American friends). so i imagine they are pretty cool to stare at in person.
