Jeanne Gaigher is an exciting young artist from Cape Town whose debut solo show Club is opening at SMITH gallery this week. i first saw her work at a group exhibition earlier this year, and Anton and i immediately bought a piece: this painting that you can see in our study – our first grown up art purchase.

Jeanne has a unique method of painting on layers of scrim, a gauze like cotton textile that’s often used in making curtains. so some of her pieces have qualities of both painting and textiles, which i find really interesting.

When I paint I think of the etching workshops I attended at university. I apply paint layer upon layer – but not as systematic. Painting gives me freedom to weave together everything I want the audience to be part of. It can take on any shape. Without physically seeing the paint around me in a whole, my process feels transparent and non-existing. Paint ends up being my documentary film.

Club will run from 20 August to 19 September at SMITH. find them at 56 Church Street, Cape Town.

I love her work, so intricate yet very calm. The last 3 paintings at the end of your selection are my favorite.

I always love your artwork posts, but this one is outstanding! Her way of arranging colours and shapes is brilliant.

i don’t think it’s rude, i am just being honest. when i say it’s not my flavour it means it’s not to my taste – but that doesn’t mean the paintings aren’t good, or that the painter is not talented, or that other people won’t love them.

    I really love it!
I have yet to bring myself to invest money in like “real art”, this is generally quite an investment, even for the young artists (seeing website like http://artfetch.com/ I do get more and more tempted though!)
