Claudia Corrent is an Italian photographer whose project Insulae (The Islands) offers a different perspective on Venice. i have been lucky enough to visit Venice twice – though never ventured beyond the main island. it’s interesting to see it like this, more from a local’s point of view (and minus all the tourists that are usually so conspicuous throughout).

The research starts from the city of Venice and its territory, Corrent has tried to analyse the everyday landscape to investigate the link between place and identity, trying to exclude the stereotypes and clichés that inevitably offers a city like Venice. She has mapped the entire lagoon and its islands (Burano, Lido, St. Erasmus, St. Francis of the Desert, Pellestrina) through the streets and squares in search of signs, urban icons, landscapes and people. Through a “minority of the look” going to dwell on little things, on minimal objects and marginal; The working methodology has been random, favouring an encounter with the reality of the place through objects, people and artefacts. (roughly translated from Italian)

you can see the entire series, and her other projects, on her website.
