i was roaming around looking for work for my next Imaginary Curator post (more on that later) when i discovered the work of Anna Valdez. fun fact, Anna has an academic background in archaeology and socio-cultural anthropology and actually began her artistic career after keeping a sketchbook during an archaeological dig.
Recently, many of my pieces have been still lifes. These arrangements have been composed from various household items such as my clothes, quilts, scarves, blankets, houseplants, drawings, paintings, books, records, and vessels. These items exist as a part of my domestic environment, and I have put them in my paintings to understand the domestic sphere as emblematic of both personal and collective experience.

What wonderfully exuberant and happy work – love the trompe l’oeil quality of some of the pieces and the canvas sizes are the icing on the cake – thanks for featuring Anna’s work for us to revel in – she is a modern day Matisse :)
Such beautiful pieces of work; coming alive with the colours used. Loved every single canvas.
Utterly gorgeous and it somehow feels ‘healthy’ to stare at them, as if they are giving my brain good vibrations! I’ve nabbed one for my FB header (with link to Anna’s website, natch).
I love her work – how inspiring !! brightens my morning
