When these delightful and expressive portraits of dogs by UK artist Sally Muir came on my radar recently I thought, why does she feel so familiar to me? Where have I heard about her before…? Turns out, Sally Muir is one of the original designers of that Princess Diana sweater, when she began knitwear company Warm & Wonderful way back in 1979 with fellow artist Joanna Osborne. What started with a market stall in Covent Garden launched a legendary sweater that was worn by Bowie, Warhol, Shelley Duvall and Lady Di amongst others.
Anyway, back to those dogs. After running her knitwear company for many years Muir returned to university to study fine art, and is now a “prodigious portrait painter of dogs.”
Artist Sally Muir is based in Bath, UK and is a prodigious portrait painter of dogs. Other subjects include human portraits and landscapes, as well as the occasional rodent and bird. A recipient of many awards, Muir’s work appears regularly in galleries. She welcomes and enjoys commission work – dogs and humans alike.
You can purchase her book A Dog A Day, chronicling 365 days of dog portraits, and see more work on her website and instagram.
