I discovered artist Meredith Maher on Tik Tok where the video of the creation of her puzzle-made artwork Pool Party has notched up over 2 million views. I immediately went to look at all her other wonderful work – Dreaming Girl is my favourite.
The art that was never supposed to be. The pieces that are supposed to fit and the boxes that aren’t boxes at all. I continually gravitate towards the idea of supposed to, should, ought to and the identities we take on to fulfil the shoulds. The interest for me is contradiction. Conventionally unconventional. Ideas of high brow, low brow, questioning the nature of tradition while making odes to it. Abandoned missing people and things finding belonging and finding a new sense of cohesion. Life to me is this continual effort of tuning ones perspective to make sense of the contradictions in ourselves and in the world around us.
